Bruce Schneier argues that data breach notification laws are a good idea. I’d agree. I was working on an application that stored personal information when the ChoicePoint breach was reported, and it changed the way I thought about how much data we should archive. As Schneier points out, most identity theft results from computers belonging to individuals being compromised, but companies that deal in bulk amounts of user data should be particularly responsible when it comes to safeguarding that data. Heartland Payment Systems announced yesterday that cyber criminals compromised its computer network, gaining access to customer information associated with the 100 million card transactions it handles each month.From CNET:Heartland Payment Systems, which processes payroll and credit card payments for more than 250,000 businesses, reported Tuesday that consumer credit card data was exposed in what may be the largest security breach ever.In a statement that coincided with President Barack Obama’s inauguration events, Heartland said the breach occurred last year but that it found evidence of the intrusion last week and immediately notified law enforcement and credit card companies. read blog »

11. The team that produced the RFDump research/hacker tool for cloning and altering data stored on radio-frequency ID tags has now come out with a product to thwart RFID hackers. German security researcher Lukas Grunwald, who made headlines two years ago for uncovering security vulnerabilities in new electronic passports being adopted by the U.S. and other countries, created RFDump with colleague Boris Wolf in 2004. Now the two have created RF-Wall (shown on the lower shelf in the picture at right) to help thwart RFID fraud and attacks against e-passports, electronic access cards and payment cards — such as the Mifare Classic card that is used in the London Underground and which security researchers recently cracked. read blog »
